A Complete Sample of Soft X-ray Selected AGN: II. Statistical Analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
Direct correlations and a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) are presented for a complete sample of 110 soft X-ray selected AGN of which about half are Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). The direct correlation analyses show that narrower FWHM(Hβ) correlates with steeper X-ray spectrum, stronger optical FeII emission, weaker [OIII] emission and stronger short-term X-ray variability. This direct correlation analysis and the PCA confirm the Boroson & Green (1992) Eigenvector 1 relationship for AGN: FeII strength anti-correlates with [OIII] line strength. Eigenvector 1 is well-correlated with the Eddington luminosity ratio L/LEdd while Eigenvector 2 shows a very good correlation with the mass of the central black hole MBH and the mass accretion rate Ṁ . The Eddington ratio L/LEdd correlates with the X-ray spectral index αX and the black home mass MBH anti-correlates with the X-ray variability χ /ν. The Eddington ration L/LEdd may be interpreted as the age of an AGN: AGN with steep X-ray spectra, strong FeII, and weak [OIII] are AGN in an early phase of their evolution. In this hypothesis NLS1s are young AGN. Subject headings: galaxies: active quasars:general

The Piccinotti AGN sample observed in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey
The ROSAT All-Sky Survey observations of the complete hard X-ray selected Piccinotti AGN sample demonstrate that the soft X-ray spectra of almost none of the sample AGN can be simply represented by the power law extrapolated from the 2 10 keV range. A comparison of the soft X-ray spectra of the sample members with their medium energy continua measured with HEAO-1 and EXOSAT revealed that about ...
متن کاملIdentification of a complete sample of northern ROSAT All-sky Survey X-ray sources
In order to derive statistical properties of a complete X-ray selected sample of AGN we used the classification spectra of the RASS Selected Areas-North survey to study the luminosities, redshifts , X-ray/visual flux ratios, line widths, and various correlations between observed parameters of all Seyfert galaxies and QSOs in this sample. On the basis of these data we discuss implications for th...
متن کاملX - ray variability in a complete sample of Soft X - ray selected AGN ⋆
We present ROSAT All-Sky Survey and ROSAT pointed observations (PSPC and HRI) of a complete sample of 113 bright soft X-ray AGN selected from the ROSAT Bright Source Catalog. We compare these observations in order to search for extreme cases of flux and spectral X-ray variability-X-ray transient AGN. Three definite transients and one transient candidate are found. The other sources show amplitu...
متن کاملClustering of X–ray selected Active Galactic Nuclei
A total of 235 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) from two different soft X-ray surveys (the ROSAT Deep Survey –DRS– and the ROSAT International X-ray Optical Survey –RIXOS–) with redshifts between 0 and 3.5 are used to study the clustering of Xray selected AGN and its evolution. A 2 sigma significant detection of clustering of such objects is found on scales < 40 − 80 h Mpc in the RIXOS sample, whil...
متن کاملNew Bright Soft X-ray Selected Rosat Agn: I. Infrared–to–x-ray Spectral Energy Distributions
We present results of an infrared-to-X-ray study of 76 bright soft X-ray selected Seyfert galaxies discovered in the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. These objects are characterized by steep X-ray spectra in the 0.2-2.0 keV bandpass with power law energy spectral indices in the range of 1.3 to 8 and a lack of internal absorption by neutral hydrogen. Our sample selection based on hardness ratio yields a me...
